💡 The essentials

Safest route: buy your whey on the brand’s official website or from an identified retailer (a specialist shop, Decathlon, a pharmacy).

  • Cheapest: the brand’s own site during a sale, or Decathlon.
  • Advice and instant purchase: a sports nutrition shop.
  • To avoid: unknown sellers on marketplaces and social media.

Plenty of you ask us: “Where can I buy whey protein?”. The brand’s site, Amazon, Decathlon, a pharmacy, a supermarket or your gym’s counter: every channel has its advantages, but they are not all equal on safety. This guide compares the places you buy from, not the products: to work out which whey to take, see our guide on which whey protein to choose. The shops below are French and EU retailers, and most of them ship across the EU.

🛒 Where to buy whey protein: the channels compared

Here is our score for each channel on five criteria. The brand’s official website remains the best compromise between price, choice and traceability; the specialist shop wins as soon as you need advice.

The brand’s official website

This is our first choice: you buy the product at source, with its full nutrition panel and its batch number. Sales are frequent there: in October 2026, Myprotein’s Impact Whey was listed at €38.99 for 900 g instead of €59.99. Discover the brands we follow in our ranking of the best whey protein brands.

The specialist sports nutrition shop

Ideal if you are starting out: a shop assistant can point you in the right direction and you walk out with your tub straight away. Prices are often a bit higher than online, but that advice has real value when you cannot yet read a label.

Decathlon

Decathlon is the cheapest in-store option: around €35 to €39 for 900 g of its standard whey and around €49 for 900 g of its isolate (checked in October 2026). Its whey is made in France, with 70 g of protein per 100 g in the standard version and 82 g in the isolate (chocolate flavour). Our full analysis: our review of Decathlon whey.

The pharmacy and the parapharmacy

Pharmacies and parapharmacies, on the high street or online, stock a few protein powders. The channel is tightly regulated, but the choice is small and the prices are rarely the lowest. It is a good option if you want a healthcare professional’s opinion at the same time.

Amazon and the marketplaces

The choice is huge and delivery is fast, but always check who the seller is: the brand’s official store or an unknown reseller. An abnormally low price, a listing with no nutrition table or no manufacturer’s address are warning signs.

The supermarket and the gym

You can now find whey in supermarkets and on the chains’ own websites (Carrefour.fr for instance, in France), as well as at the counter of plenty of gyms. It is handy as a stopgap, but the choice is limited and the price per kilo is often less attractive.

🎯 Where to buy your whey according to your profile

You are a beginner

I would advise making your first purchase in a shop (specialist or Decathlon) so you get advice and can pick a small size. Our suitable products are in the guide to the best whey protein for beginners.

You are intermediate or advanced

Buy online from the brand’s site, and in a large size: you will spread the delivery cost and benefit from the loyalty schemes some brands run, such as Nutrimuscle or Nutripure. Always compare the price per kilo, not the price of the tub.

You are after the cheapest

Decathlon and the brands’ online sales are the two cheapest routes. Be wary, though, of “low cost” brands whose serving brings little protein: the price per 20 g serving of protein is the only honest comparison.

You are after the highest quality

Online, we suggest you look at the French brands Nutripure and Nutrimuscle, which have an excellent reputation for quality and ship from France. Our favourite is Nutripure (partner link):

You are after a vegan protein

We used to recommend the online brand Sync Protein, but that is no longer the case: in 2024 the DGCCRF, the French consumer protection authority, ordered it to stop using “vegan” claims it judged misleading, after analyses showed milk in products presented as vegan (source: UFC-Que Choisir), and its official site no longer leads to its shop. Nutripure, for example, offers an organic plant protein based on pea and rice, described by the brand as vegan and gluten free. More options in our guide to what you can replace whey with.

⚠️ The risks of buying in the wrong place

In its opinion on sports supplements, ANSES stresses that buying on the internet increases your exposure to fraudulent or contaminated supplements, with a risk of a positive anti-doping test and of effects on your health. It recommends favouring products that comply with the AFNOR NF V94-001 standard (now the European standard EN 17444) and the best controlled channels: compliance with French regulations, traceability, an identified manufacturer.

The 4 checks before buying whey protein: label, batch number, manufacturer, sensible price

⚠️ Watch out

  • Steer clear of sales via private messages, tubs with no French-language label and prices far below the market.
  • Check that the nutrition table, the ingredients list, the batch number and the manufacturer’s address are all there.
  • Ask your doctor for advice before buying if you have kidney, liver or heart disease, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for a teenager: ANSES advises against these supplements without medical advice in those situations.

For the detail of the risks tied to whey itself (kidneys, digestion, contamination), read our file on whey protein and danger. A good place to buy reduces the risk of an adulterated product, it is no substitute for sensible use.

📍 Buying whey protein in your city

Would you rather use a shop near you? We have listed the shops and delivery options city by city:

🔬 Our method

We compared the sales channels on five criteria (price, choice, advice, safety, speed) using the prices shown on the brands’ sites and on Decathlon (checked in October 2026), the product sheets and the ANSES recommendations on buying sports supplements. The safety scores follow the traceability of the channel, not our partnerships.

🏆 Our verdict: the best place to buy your whey

For us, the official site of a recognised brand, in a large size and during a sale, is the best place to buy your whey. That is where the price per kilo, the traceability and the choice of flavours are at their best. The specialist shop is still the right reflex for a first, guided purchase.

This advice does not suit everyone: if you need your tub today, or if you do not yet know which type to take, ordering online is not the best option. And whichever channel you use, compare the products first in our comparison of the best whey proteins.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can you buy whey protein in a supermarket?

Yes, more and more supermarkets and their online shops sell whey protein. The choice stays limited and the price per kilo is often less attractive than on a brand’s site. Check the protein content per 100 g before you buy.

Is Decathlon whey protein any good?

Yes, it is a decent and affordable whey, made in France. Its standard version shows 70 g of protein per 100 g (chocolate flavour), slightly below the best concentrates. All the details are in our Decathlon file.

Is it cheaper to buy your whey online?

Often yes, especially in a large size and during the brands’ sales. Build the delivery cost into your sums and compare the price per kilo, not the price of the tub.

Can you buy whey protein in a pharmacy?

Yes, some pharmacies and parapharmacies sell protein powders, in store or online. The channel is safe, but the choice is small and prices are generally higher.

Is it good to take whey protein every day?

Yes for a healthy adult, as long as your total protein intake stays sensible. The amount depends on your body weight and your diet: see how much whey protein per day.
