💡 The essentials

No whey protein makes you lose weight: the best whey protein for weight loss is simply the one that gives you the most protein for the fewest calories and the least sugar. On that measure, the isolates win comfortably.

  • Our pick: Nutripure’s Whey Isolate Native, 26 g of protein for 115 kcal and under 0.1 g of sugars per shake, at the best price of any native isolate.
  • Most protein per calorie: Nutri&Co (28 g for 113 kcal), then AM Nutrition in the unflavoured version.
  • The trap: the liquid. A shake made with semi-skimmed milk (250 ml) almost doubles the calories of the same shake made with water.

You want to lose weight and you are looking for the best whey protein for weight loss? Between any two whey proteins, the gap in calories per shake is small; what really separates them is the amount of protein per calorie and the sugar. We compared seven whey proteins on those figures, then kept the four best-placed isolates.

🚨 Our pick for cutting: Nutripure, a native isolate with no added sugar and no sweetener in the unflavoured version.

📊 Calories, sugar and protein per shake: the comparison

🔬 Our method

We took the nutrition tables from the official product pages in October 2026, with no laboratory analysis. Every value is brought back to a 30 g serving (31 g for Optimum Nutrition, the brand’s own scoop), in the unflavoured version wherever one exists. The key number is grams of protein per 100 kcal: the higher it is, the more the powder helps you hit your protein target without eating into your calorie budget.

AM Nutrition Pure Isolate (unflavoured)Isolate114 kcal27.3 g0.3 g23.9 g

Decathlon Whey ProteinConcentrate113 kcal21 g2.4 g18.5 g
Values from the official product pages (October 2026), worked out for 30 g from the per 100 g figures where the brand uses a different serving. Made up with water.

All of these whey proteins sit around 110 to 116 kcal per shake: choosing an isolate will not save you calories, but it will give you more protein for the same calories. Between the best isolate and the least dense concentrate, the gap reaches 7 g of protein and 2.4 g of sugars per shake. For the breakdown by type and by liquid, see our page on whey protein calories.

Whey protein shake made with water, about 115 kcal, next to one made with semi-skimmed milk, about 233 kcal

The liquid counts for more than the brand. According to the Ciqual table published by ANSES, the French food safety agency (in French), 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk brings around 118 kcal: your shake goes from 115 to roughly 233 kcal. When you are cutting, make it with water or with an unsweetened plant drink; our guide on what to mix whey protein with compares the options.

🏆 The best whey proteins for weight loss, in detail

1. Nutripure Whey Isolate Native: the best whey protein for cutting

Nutripure Whey Isolate Native product page

Judged on protein content, sugar, formula and price, the best whey isolate for weight loss is the one from Nutripure. In the unflavoured version it contains nothing but French milk isolate and sunflower lecithin: 115 kcal, 26 g of protein, 0.9 g of carbohydrate and 0.03 g of sugars per 30 g serving, with no sweetener. Compare labels on the same basis, the product as sold: the Nutripure Whey Isolate shows 86.8 g of protein per 100 g (94% on a dry-matter basis), at around €47 a kilo (recorded in October 2026). It ships from France.

2. AM Nutrition Pure Whey Isolate: the simplest formula

AM Nutrition PURE Whey Isolate product page

In the unflavoured version it is 100% isolate, with no additives at all, and 91 g of protein per 100 g: that is 27.3 g of protein for 114 kcal per 30 g serving. On paper it matches Nutripure; the only thing that puts it behind is the price, around €61 a kilo (recorded in October 2026). The flavoured versions add sucralose and a lactase.

3. Nutri&Co Whey Isolate Native: the most protein per calorie

Nutri&Co Whey Isolate Native product page

28 g of protein for 113 kcal and 0 g of sugars per serving: this is the most protein-dense whey in our comparison. The lactose is declared at under 0.02% and the flavoured versions are sweetened with stevia. Its only real weakness is the price, around €67 a kilo (recorded in October 2026).

4. BioTechUSA Iso Whey Zero: the lightest per serving

BioTechUSA Iso Whey Zero product page

At 366 kcal per 100 g it is the least calorific isolate in the comparison, and its official 25 g scoop brings only 91 kcal for 21 g of protein. Its appeal is the choice of flavours, but it contains sucralose, flavourings and, depending on the flavour, colourings. The 1.816 kg tub works out at €57.76 a kilo (recorded in October 2026).

🔬 Does whey protein really help you lose weight?

Whey protein helps a little, provided you are in a calorie deficit; it does not make you lose weight on its own. In people who are overweight, a meta-analysis of 9 trials found an average of 0.56 kg less body weight and 1.12 kg less fat mass with whey, along with better preservation of lean mass. Those are modest effects. And no “makes you lose weight” claim is authorised for protein in the European Union in any case.

Its real job on a cut is to protect your muscle while you are eating less. In trained people in a calorie deficit, the ISSN suggests that 2.3 to 3.1 g of protein per kg per day may be useful to preserve lean mass as well as possible. As for appetite, the hunger-blunting effect stays small. For the full strategy, read our guides on whey protein and weight loss and on whey protein for weight loss, a woman’s view.

🚫 The “fat burners” to avoid

  • Garcinia cambogia: banned in France. ANSES, the French food safety agency, recorded serious adverse effects (liver damage in particular), and a ministerial order of 15 April 2025 bans the marketing of food supplements that contain it (French Ministry of Agriculture (in French)). If you still have any at home, do not take them.
  • Concentrated green tea extracts: take care. EFSA concluded in 2018 that EGCG doses of 800 mg a day or more could be associated with liver damage (EFSA).
  • CLA: claim refused. In 2015 EFSA refused the claim that it “contributes to a reduction in body fat mass”, because the reduction came with a rise in markers of inflammation (EFSA opinion).
  • L-carnitine: no miracle. It carries fatty acids into the cell, but it is no substitute whatsoever for a calorie deficit.

Would you rather avoid powders altogether? Pea protein, egg protein or simply protein-rich foods (0% fromage blanc, eggs, fish) do the same job: our guide on whey protein alternatives compares their protein per 100 g. And if you want other brands to look at, these are the ones we follow:

  • MYPROTEIN
  • DECATHLON
  • NUTRIPURE
  • YAM NUTRITION
  • BULK

💬 Our verdict

To lose weight, take an isolate that is unflavoured or lightly sweetened, mix it with water, and use it to hit your protein target rather than to replace your meals. Nutripure offers the best balance of price and formula, while AM Nutrition and Nutri&Co give you slightly more protein per calorie for more money. A concentrate like MyProtein or Decathlon is still perfectly fine on a tight budget: you lose a few grams of protein per shake, not your cut.

This ranking is not for you if what you want is a slimming product: without a calorie deficit, no whey protein makes you lose weight, and an extra shake on top of your usual meals can even put weight on you (read does whey protein make you fat?). For a ranking that covers every goal, see our best whey protein comparison, or the ranking of the best whey isolate.

⚠️ Watch out

A very high-protein diet does not suit everyone: ask a doctor first if you have kidney or liver disease, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are on any medication, or if the powder is for a teenager. ANSES has logged adverse effects above all with supplements sold for weight loss or for bulking up: do not stack them.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the best protein powder for weight loss?

A whey isolate, because it brings roughly 23 to 24 g of protein per 100 kcal with almost no sugar. In our comparison, Nutripure, AM Nutrition and Nutri&Co come out on top. Plant proteins are an alternative if you are avoiding dairy.

Is it a good idea to take whey protein to lose weight?

Yes if it helps you eat enough protein inside a calorie deficit, no if it is simply added to your meals without replacing anything. The studies show a modest effect on fat mass and better muscle retention. Read our page on whey isolate for weight loss as well.

Which protein makes you lose the most weight?

No protein makes you lose weight by itself. Protein simply has the highest cost of digestion after alcohol, which plays a small part in satiety. It is the overall calorie deficit that makes you lose weight.

What is the best protein shake for weight loss?

A 30 g scoop of whey isolate mixed with water: roughly 110 to 115 kcal for 25 to 28 g of protein. Steer clear of “diet shakes” loaded with sugars or fat burners. If the taste starts to bore you, add berries rather than whole milk.
