💡 The essentials

Going by the published customer reviews, the best Gold Standard whey flavour is chocolate (Double Rich Chocolate or Extreme Milk Chocolate), neck and neck with vanilla.

  • Top 3: Chocolate, Vanilla, then Banana Cream, the best rated of the fruity flavours.
  • Less convincing: Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter, both below the average.
  • Price: around €60 for the roughly 900 g tub, €48 for the new 768 to 780 g tubs (recorded in October 2026).

Optimum Nutrition bills its Gold Standard 100% Whey on its own site as the best-selling whey powder in the world, and it comes in eleven flavours on the brand’s French site. The downside is that picking one is a lottery when you have never tasted the brand, especially as the names are left in English.

Rather than hand you our own personal favourite, we counted what more than a thousand buyers say about each flavour. The result actually contradicts the older version of this article, which put Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter at the top.

🔬 Our method

No tasting session on our side: this ranking comes from the 1,124 customer reviews published on the Gold Standard listing at the Body & Fit shop (June 2019 to October 2026). We picked out the flavour named in each one and worked out the average score per flavour. The flavours, labels, tub sizes and prices come from the official Optimum Nutrition France listing, recorded in October 2026.

🥛 The 11 Gold Standard whey flavours sold in France

Gold Standard 100% Whey product page on the official Optimum Nutrition France site

The official Optimum Nutrition France site lists eleven flavours, five of them variations on chocolate:

  • Chocolate: Double Rich Chocolate, Extreme Milk Chocolate, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate Peanut Butter, White Chocolate Raspberry
  • Vanilla: French Vanilla, Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Fruity: Delicious Strawberry, Banana Cream
  • Others: Cookies & Cream, UnFlavored (no added flavouring)

The serving does not weigh the same in every flavour: the roughly 900 g tub holds 30 servings in Delicious Strawberry or Vanilla Ice Cream, 29 in Double Rich Chocolate (a 31 g serving) and 28 in Cookies & Cream or Chocolate Peanut Butter. On the Double Rich Chocolate label, one serving brings 24 g of protein and 1 g of sugars, from a blend of whey isolate, concentrate and hydrolysed isolate.

Watch the price per kilo with the new tub sizes. Alongside the long-standing tubs (around €60 for roughly 900 g, €115 for 2.26 to 2.28 kg), the site now sells tubs of 768 to 780 g at around €48 and of 2.02 to 2.04 kg at around €97. Those smaller tubs actually work out slightly cheaper per kilo (about €63 against €67), but check the weight before you compare two offers.

🏆 The best Gold Standard whey flavours, ranked

The listing’s overall score is 4.87/5. What really separates the flavours, then, is how many buyers name them and the handful of 3 and 4 star ratings:

1. Chocolate: the most named and the best rated. Around 80 reviews mention a “plain” chocolate (Double Rich or Extreme Milk), and every one of them gives 4 or 5 stars. Double Rich Chocolate also comes in eight sizes, from 310 g to 4.53 kg, so you can try it without committing to a big tub.

2. Vanilla: almost as popular, slightly more divisive. 79 reviews talk about vanilla, four of them at 3 stars, which puts it just behind chocolate. It is also the flavour that lends itself best to a whey protein shake with fruit or oats.

3. Banana Cream: the best average outside chocolate. Across the 20 reviews that name it, banana scores 4.9/5 with not a single rating below 4 stars. The sample is small, but it is the best bet if you want to step away from chocolate and vanilla. Strawberry, named more often (28 reviews), lands just behind it.

Chart: number of customer reviews naming each Gold Standard whey flavour

⚠️ Watch out

These reviews show a trend, not a measurement. Of the 1,124 reviews on the Body & Fit listing, not one gives 1 or 2 stars, which is an unusual spread. The reviews are also written in several languages, and most of them name no flavour at all. Gaps of a few tenths of a point between flavours should not be over-read.

🎯 Our verdict on the Gold Standard flavours

For a first tub, we would take the Double Rich Chocolate: it is the most named flavour, the best rated, and it comes in eight sizes including a small 310 g tub. If you blend your whey into recipes, Vanilla Ice Cream is the more versatile choice. And if Cookies & Cream tempts you, buy a small size first: buyers rate it below the classics.

Gold Standard is not for you if you avoid artificial sweeteners: the Double Rich Chocolate label lists sucralose and acesulfame K. Nor is it the cheapest option: at about €63 per kilo it costs a good deal more than Nutrimuscle’s Whey Native (around €38 per kilo), whose range we rank on our dedicated page on the best Nutrimuscle flavours.

Optimum Nutrition recommends one serving in 180 to 240 ml of cold water, and adds that you can also mix it into milk or a smoothie. Milk gives a creamier shake, which helps if a flavour tastes a bit thin in water. To fine-tune how much liquid to use, see the right whey to water ratio.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the best Gold Standard whey flavour?

Chocolate, as Double Rich Chocolate or Extreme Milk Chocolate. It is the flavour named most often in the published customer reviews, with an average of 4.9/5. Vanilla follows very closely, and Banana Cream is the best fruity option.

How much protein is in a serving of Gold Standard?

24 g of protein per 31 g serving in Double Rich Chocolate, which works out at 76 g per 100 g. The serving weight shifts slightly from flavour to flavour: a tub of roughly 900 g holds 28 to 30 servings depending on which one you buy.

Which sweeteners does Gold Standard whey contain?

Sucralose and acesulfame K, according to the Double Rich Chocolate label. Both sweeteners are authorised in the European Union, and in 2026 EFSA confirmed that sucralose is safe at the authorised uses. If you want to steer clear of them, check the label of the UnFlavored version, the only one with no flavouring.

Why are the Gold Standard tubs smaller than before?

Optimum Nutrition now sells tubs of 768 to 780 g and of 2.02 to 2.04 kg alongside the long-standing sizes. They cost less per tub and slightly less per kilo as of October 2026. Always compare the weight and the number of servings before you buy.

Is Gold Standard the best whey on the market?

It is our number one for taste, not for everything else. Our ranking of the best whey protein names it the best whey on flavour, but Nutripure still leads overall, and Optimum Nutrition only comes 5th in our brand comparison.
