💡 The essentials

  • An unflavoured whey is a whey with no flavouring and no sweetener: the ingredient list fits on one or two lines, and you choose the taste.
  • Our number 1: Nutripure Whey Isolate Native unflavoured, French milk, 86.8 g of protein per 100 g, 0.2 g of lactose, and about $61 per kilo of protein in the 4 kg tub.
  • The richest in protein: Nutrixeal Nutratrail (90 g), the purest: Nutrimuscle (a single ingredient), the easiest to find: Decathlon.

Choosing an unflavoured whey means refusing to pay for flavouring, sucralose or thickeners. It is also the only whey that goes anywhere: in porridge, a smoothie, pancake batter or a savoury dish, with no vanilla or chocolate taste. It still has to be truly pure. We compared the labels of four unflavoured wheys sold in France, from native isolate to the supermarket tub.

🔬 Our method

This comparison relies only on the official product pages: ingredient list, nutrition facts per 100 g as sold, lactose content, milk origin, and the prices shown on each brand’s French website on 19 October 2026. These shops bill in euros: dollar prices are converted at the European Central Bank rate of that day (1 € = $1.1225). The price criterion is the kilo of protein, not the price of the tub. We do not run lab tests and we do not taste the products.

🥛 Unflavoured whey: what exactly is it?

An unflavoured whey (also called natural or neutral) contains no flavouring, no sweetener and no colouring. What is left is the whey protein itself, sometimes with an emulsifier (sunflower lecithin) that helps it dissolve in the shaker. Its taste is mild and slightly milky.

  • It is richer in protein than the same whey with a flavour: at Nutripure, 86.8 g per 100 g unflavoured against 79.5 g in vanilla.
  • It contains no sweetener: no sucralose, no stevia, no acesulfame K.
  • It works in cooking without adding a sweet taste, which makes it the best base for your recipes.

Careful, “unflavoured” does not mean “isolate”: an unflavoured whey can be a concentrate, with more lactose. To understand the types of whey, read our guide what is whey isolate and our page on native whey.

🏆 Our ranking of unflavoured wheys in 2026

Price per kilo of protein of four unflavoured wheys, October 2026
Unflavoured wheyIngredientsProtein per 100 gLactose per 100 gMilk originPrice per kilo of protein
1. Nutripure Whey Isolate Native unflavouredIsolate + sunflower lecithin86.8 g0.2 gFranceabout $61 to $77
2. Nutrixeal Nutratrail Whey Isolate NatureIsolate + sunflower lecithin90 g2 g maximumEUabout $62
3. Nutrimuscle Native Whey Isolate unflavouredIsolate only85.5 gnot stated (5.5 g of sugars)Franceabout $81 to $102
4. Decathlon unflavoured whey proteinConcentrate + sunflower lecithin76.7 gabout 8.1 gEUabout $63

The price per kilo of protein depends above all on the size: the same Nutripure whey goes from $77 in the 750 g pouch to $61 in the 4 kg tub. Always compare the same size, and per kilo of protein rather than the shelf price.

1. Nutripure Whey Isolate Native unflavoured: the best in large sizes

It is the unflavoured whey that brings together the most qualities: a native isolate cold-filtered from fresh French milk, 86.8 g of protein per 100 g as sold (94% on a dry basis), 0.2 g of lactose per 100 g, and a single sunflower lecithin on top of the protein. Expect $50.40 for 750 g, $123.36 for 2 kg and $213.16 for 4 kg, about $77, $71 then $61 per kilo of protein. The 2 kg tub was listed as out of stock on 19 October 2026. Its only flaw: the lecithin, where Nutrimuscle has a single ingredient.

2. Nutrixeal Nutratrail Whey Isolate Nature: the richest in protein

Nutrixeal states 90 g of protein per 100 g, the highest content of this comparison, with an isolate obtained by ultrafiltration, sunflower lecithin, 2% lactose at most and milk from a European supply chain. At $28.06 for 500 g, that is about $62 per kilo of protein, almost as good as Nutripure in 4 kg. But it only comes in 500 g: at 30 g a day, a pouch lasts about two weeks.

3. Nutrimuscle Native Whey Isolate unflavoured: the purest

It is the only whey in this comparison made of a single ingredient: native whey protein isolate, not instantised, from French milk (supplier Ingredia). It shows 85.5 g of protein per 100 g. It is, however, the most expensive: $43.72 for 500 g, $79.64 per kilo and $277.20 for 4 kg, about $102, $93 then $81 per kilo of protein. With no emulsifier, it mixes a little less easily than an instant powder.

4. Decathlon unflavoured whey protein: the cheapest in store

Decathlon sells its unflavoured whey for $43.77 per 900 g, with a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 491 customer reviews on its website. It has two ingredients, a whey concentrate of EU origin and sunflower lecithin, and it is made in France. It is a concentrate: 76.7 g of protein and about 8.1 g of lactose per 100 g, which makes it less suitable if milk does not agree with you. About $63 per kilo of protein. ℹ️ Good to know

Unflavoured whey is not organic whey: “unflavoured” is about taste (no flavouring), “organic” is about farming. None of the four wheys in this comparison is certified organic. And if you would rather have an indulgent shake without sucralose, see our comparison of vanilla whey, where two picks use stevia or no sweetener at all.

🍳 How to use an unflavoured whey

  • In a shake: 30 g in 250 ml of milk or plant drink, with a banana or a spoon of cocoa if you want some taste.
  • In porridge or quark: add the whey off the heat and stir well to avoid lumps.
  • In baking: replace part of the flour in pancakes or crêpes. Ideas in our whey protein recipes.

🎯 Which unflavoured whey to choose for your profile?

  • You take it every day: Nutripure in 4 kg, the lowest price per kilo of protein in this comparison, with French milk.
  • You want the most protein: Nutrixeal Nutratrail, if the small size does not bother you.
  • You want a single ingredient on the label: Nutrimuscle, if you accept paying more.
  • You want to buy it in a shop: Decathlon, if you digest lactose well.
  • Milk does not agree with you: take an isolate, Nutripure states 0.2 g of lactose per 100 g.

🏁 Our verdict

The best unflavoured whey, for us, is Nutripure Whey Isolate Native: a native isolate from French milk, almost lactose-free, and the lowest price per kilo of protein of this comparison in the 4 kg tub. It is not for you if you want a single ingredient (take Nutrimuscle) or if you want a cheap small size to try (take Nutrixeal). ⚠️ Warning

Whey complements your diet, it does not replace a meal. If you have a milk protein allergy, are pregnant or have kidney disease, ask your doctor before taking it.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the most natural whey?

An unflavoured whey with a single ingredient, such as Nutrimuscle Native Whey Isolate unflavoured, which contains nothing but whey isolate. Nutripure and Nutrixeal only add sunflower lecithin.

What is the healthiest whey?

No whey is “healthy” in itself, but an unflavoured isolate cuts everything that is not protein: no sweetener, no flavouring, very little lactose and fat. The rest depends on the amount and on your diet.

Does unflavoured whey have a taste?

A mild, milky taste, neutral enough to disappear in a smoothie, porridge or pancake batter. With water alone it is bland: add a fruit, cocoa or vanilla.

Can you cook with unflavoured whey?

Yes, whey works in cooking in pancakes, crêpes or cakes. It is still a source of protein once cooked; mix it well into the batter to avoid lumps.
