What is your main goal?

Summarise this article with:

💡 The essentials

  • The most complete: Applied Nutrition ABE, 200 mg of caffeine, 4 g of citrulline malate, 3 g of creatine and 2 g of beta-alanine, for about $1.24 a serving.
  • The cheapest per session: Cellucor C4 Original, 150 mg of caffeine, about $0.71 a serving in the 60-serving size.
  • Caffeine-free, for evening sessions: Nutripure Pure Workout, 0 mg of caffeine, citrulline and CarnoSyn® beta-alanine, $39.21 for 15 servings.

The pre-workout aisle is a minefield: names that hit hard, blends of fifteen ingredients, doses that are sometimes tiny and prices that triple for the same promise. To find the best pre-workout, read the doses, add up the caffeine and divide the price by the number of sessions. That is exactly what we did for eight pre-workouts sold in France.

🔬 Our method

This comparison relies only on the labels and official product pages, with the prices shown by the brands or their retailers in France on 22 October 2026. These shops bill in euros: dollar prices are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 21 October 2026 (1 € = $1.1234). The price per serving is the tub price divided by the stated number of servings. We do not run lab tests and we do not taste the products: we compare doses and prices, and rely on the ISSN, EFSA and Anses positions for safety benchmarks.

🔎 How to read a pre-workout label?

A pre-workout is not a potion: it is a list of doses, and an ingredient without a written dose does not exist. Three reflexes before you buy:

  • Look for grams, not names: a “proprietary blend” without detail is just flavoured air.
  • Add up every source of caffeine: anhydrous caffeine, guarana, green tea, it all stacks, plus your morning coffee.
  • Divide the price by the number of servings: a $56 tub can work out cheaper per session than a $31 one.

Caffeine: the only effect you really feel

EFSA considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day and 200 mg in a single dose safe for a healthy adult. In our comparison, doses range from 0 to more than 300 mg per serving: a heavily dosed product can almost fill your daily allowance on its own. Anses also recommends avoiding caffeinated supplements around exercise, which should make you think twice before doubling the dose.

Citrulline, beta-alanine and creatine: look at the grams

  • Citrulline: from 750 mg to 4 g depending on the product. Below 1 g, it is mostly a name on the label.
  • Beta-alanine: the ISSN retains 4 to 6 g a day for about 4 weeks, in doses of 2 g maximum. The tingling it causes is harmless and fades within 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Creatine: you need 3 to 5 g a day, and most pre-workouts contain less. Our guide to whey protein and creatine explains how to take it on the side.

Nutripure Pure Workout0 mg9 essential amino acids, citrulline, CarnoSyn® beta-alanine$39.21 (15 servings)$2.62

The ranking weighs written doses before price: a pre-workout that shows its grams beats a pricier, vaguer formula. The caffeine gaps are huge, from 0 to 330 mg per serving: choose first according to your tolerance and the time of your session.

🥇 Strengths and limits of each pre-workout

  • Applied Nutrition ABE, the most complete: readable, useful doses (4 g of citrulline, 3 g of creatine) at a reasonable price. Its label advises against it with heart disease or high blood pressure.
  • Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard, well-dosed creatine: 3.4 g of creatine per serving, but only 750 mg of citrulline.
  • Cellucor C4 Original, the best price per session: ideal to start at half a serving, but add creatine on the side (only 1.5 g).
  • Eiyolab Pre Workout HT, the densest: eleven actives, all dosed, the priciest of the classic powders, and a label that advises starting at half a serving.
  • XXL Nutrition Black Label, the most caffeinated: 330 mg per serving, for heavy caffeine users who train in the morning.
  • BioTech USA Black Blood NOX+, the mildest in caffeine: 100 mg per serving, but low doses of actives for the price and two azo dyes (E102, E129).
  • Nutrimuscle Musclepump, clean but expensive: a formula rich in amino acids, also caffeine-free, expensive per serving in the small size.

Nutripure Pure Workout: our caffeine-free pick

Pouch of Nutripure Pure Workout on a kitchen counter
Nutripure Pure Workout, a caffeine-free pre-workout, blueberry flavour.

It is the only pre-workout in this comparison with no caffeine at all: no palpitations, no broken sleep, and you stay in control of your stimulant dose. The formula combines the 9 essential amino acids, L-citrulline and CarnoSyn® beta-alanine, with a natural blueberry flavour and stevia, made in France. Expect $39.21 for the 315 g pouch, i.e. 15 servings and about $2.62 per session, and the brand also lists a 1.26 kg tub (60 servings). Its weak point: the product page does not detail every dose active by active, which is less transparent than Eiyolab.

⚠️ Side effects: who should avoid pre-workouts?

Most lifters tolerate a properly dosed pre-workout well, but it is not a harmless product. If you shake, your heart races or you sleep badly, the dose is too high for you.

  • People with heart problems or high blood pressure.
  • People with hyperthyroidism or on medication.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women and minors.
  • People sensitive to azo dyes: check the label.

⏰ How to take your pre-workout?

Take it 20 to 30 minutes before your session, and always start with half a serving. Avoid caffeinated versions after 5 pm if you are sensitive: you win a session, you lose a night. Never double the dose: two servings means twice the caffeine, not twice the results.

Taking breaks mainly lowers your caffeine tolerance. Keep the pre-workout for your big sessions, two or three times a week, or take a 2 to 4 week break if you no longer feel anything.

🧩 Pre-workout, whey and creatine: how to put it all together?

The pre-workout comes before your session; whey comes after or during the day; creatine comes every day. For whey before training, read our article on whey protein before a workout, and to choose your protein, our ranking of the best whey protein. No need to pay three times for the same thing: a simple pre-workout plus a separate creatine often costs less than a $45 all-in-one.

🏁 Our verdict

The best pre-workout is the one whose doses are written, whose caffeine matches your tolerance and whose price per session fits your budget. ABE for all-round use, C4 to start without breaking the bank, and Nutripure Pure Workout for evening sessions or if you already drink coffee all day. No pre-workout is right for you if you sleep badly or have a heart condition: start with your sleep and your plate.

⚠️ Warning

If you are on medication, have a heart condition, are pregnant or are a minor, ask your doctor before taking a pre-workout. Always add the caffeine in your pre-workout to that of your coffee, tea and energy drinks.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is the best pre-workout for beginners?

Cellucor C4 Original: 150 mg of caffeine, a simple formula and about $0.71 a serving in the 60-serving size. Start with half a serving.

Is a caffeine-free pre-workout any use?

Yes, if you are after muscle work more than a jolt. It can be taken in the evening without ruining your sleep, like Nutripure Pure Workout or caffeine-free Musclepump.

Do pre-workouts make you gain weight?

No. A serving brings few calories; what counts is your daily total.

Can you combine a pre-workout and coffee?

Yes, but add it up. A 330 mg pre-workout plus two espressos takes you past the 400 mg a day that EFSA considers safe.

Does a pre-workout with creatine replace a creatine supplement?

Almost never. Most pre-workouts contain 1 to 3 g of creatine per serving, against 3 to 5 g recommended a day: keep a separate creatine.
